Removal & Cleaning

Pebbledash & Render Removal

Our pebbledash and render removal process is carefully designed to restore the original beauty of your property’s brickwork while preserving its structural integrity. Here’s a step-by-step look at how we approach this task with precision and care.

Initial Assessment

The property's surface condition is assessed to determine the most appropriate method of removal. Our approach varies depending on the material’s age, thickness, and the characteristics of the underlying brickwork.

Removal Methods

We employ either hand chiselling or mechanical chiselling tools, carefully selected based on the surface’s sensitivity.

  • Hand Chiselling — For older or more delicate brickwork, hand chiselling is our preferred method. This precise approach allows for a gentle removal, reducing the risk of damaging the brick face beneath.
  • Mechanical Chiselling — For thicker or more robust render, we use controlled mechanical chiselling, which is faster yet carefully monitored to avoid impacting the underlying brick.

Surface Sanding

Once the render or pebbledash has been fully removed, the brick surface will typically have a rough, uneven texture. We perform a detailed sanding process to restore a smooth, flat finish to the brickwork. Sanding allows us to bring out the original shape and texture of each brick, achieving a polished and natural look.

Surface Cleaning

After sanding, we conduct a high-level clean to remove any residual dust, debris, and mortar remnants from the surface. This step involves specialised cleaning techniques, ensuring that the brickwork’s colour and natural texture are fully restored. This deep clean enhances the appearance and prepares the brickwork for any further restoration or redecoration.

Benefits of our Approach

Our meticulous process not only restores the facade to its original state but also enhances its durability and aesthetic appeal. By carefully removing the pebbledash or render and following with surface refinements, we ensure that your brickwork remains in excellent condition, ready to be showcased or further decorated as desired. Our approach is crafted to preserve both the historic value and the longterm resilience of your property’s exterior.

Brick Cleaning

Our brick cleaning service is designed to restore the natural look of your property’s brickwork by removing pollution, dirt, and old paint layers. We offer two distinct options to address different types of brick cleaning needs, both carefully tailored to preserve the integrity of the brick surface

Option 1: Steam & Cleaning Agent

This method uses a combination of steam and a specialist brick cleaning agent to remove mid-level carbon pollution from the brick surface. We apply a maximum of three chemical treatments, as any further applications may risk damaging the brickwork.

This process effectively cleans away moderate pollution, though it may not fully remove stubborn blackened areas. For bricks that remain blackened, sanding can be used as an additional service to achieve a cleaner finish.

Option 2: Paint Removal

For properties with painted brickwork, we use our DOFF steam cleaning system alongside a paint stripper to gently remove paint layers. This method works effectively for most standard paints.

However, for lead-based or heavily layered paints, DOFF and stripping alone may not achieve complete removal. In such cases, we offer a sanding option to thoroughly strip back the remaining paint and reveal the original brick surface.

Please Note

Both cleaning methods can result in some loose pointing. If this occurs, we will communicate with you about necessary repointing to ensure the brickwork is fully restored and stable. Our focus is on providing a high-quality finish while preserving the brickwork’s structural and aesthetic integrity.

Brickwork & Pointing

Brick Repair & Replacement

An essential for maintaining the structural integrity and visual appeal of your property’s facade. Here, we outline the key differences between repair and replacement, helping you understand when each option is most suitable and how they impact cost.

Brick Repair

Brick repair is an effective solution for addressing minor to moderate damage to brick surfaces, offering a cost-effective way to restore individual bricks without the need for full replacement. This process is ideal for:

  • Spalling Bricks: When bricks show signs of spalling (flaking or crumbling surfaces), we apply a specialised mortar to reface and smooth out the damaged area.
  • Cracked Bricks: For bricks with visible cracks, we use mortar to fill and restore the surface to its original shape, adding strength and durability.
  • Brick Tinting: To ensure repaired bricks blend seamlessly with surrounding brickwork, we apply a custom brick tint. This dye carefully matches the brick colour and texture, creating a cohesive, natural appearance across the facade.

Brick Replacement

For severely damaged bricks, we recommend a full replacement to maintain the structural stability and appearance of the facade. This process involves:

  • Cutting Out the Brick: We carefully cut out the damaged brick from the wall, taking care to protect the surrounding brickwork.
  • Installing a New Brick: A new, closely matched brick is installed in place, secured with fresh mortar to blend seamlessly with the surrounding area.

Cost Consideration

Choosing between brick repair and replacement often depends on the extent of the damage and budget considerations. Repairing bricks is more cost-effective for properties with a large number of minor damages, as it avoids the expense and labour of a full rebrick.

For facades with extensive deterioration, a combination of repair and selective replacement may offer the best balance between cost and appearance, ensuring a restored, durable finish that enhances your property’s value and character.

Pointing Styles

We offer a variety of lime mortar repointing styles, each tailored to suit different aesthetic preferences, structural needs, and budgets. Lime-based pointing is breathable and flexible, making it ideal for brickwork, especially in historic properties where authenticity and durability are paramount.

Flush Pointing

Our entry-level repointing option, flush pointing involves filling the mortar joint flush with the brick surface, resulting in a natural, smooth appearance. This style is most suitable for properties with well-preserved brickwork, as it highlights the original texture of the brick without concealing imperfections. Flush pointing provides an affordable and subtle finish, ideal for those seeking a straightforward restoration.

Weatherstruck Pointing

Weatherstruck pointing is also a budget-friendly option, particularly suited to brickwork with more damaged joints. In this style, the pointing is angled or “struck” to create a straightedged, sloping finish that directs water away from the joint. Weatherstruck pointing adds a more defined look to the facade, giving a clean, structured appearance and added protection against the elements.

Penny Roll Pointing

A mid-range option, penny roll pointing offers a refined, sharp appearance by first pointing the mortar flush with the brick surface, followed by tinting the brickwork to achieve a unified look. We then carefully cut lines into the pointing, exposing the original mortar colour to create crisp, defined edges. Penny roll pointing provides a distinctive, high-quality look that enhances the detail and depth of the brickwork.

Tuck Pointing

Our premium pointing finish, tuck pointing, delivers an elegant, high-end look reminiscent of traditional craftsmanship. This technique begins with a flush pointing application, and instead of cutting back, we apply a contrasting line of putty over the mortar. Once set, we cut sharp lines into the putty to create precise, decorative joints. Tuck pointing provides an exceptional level of detail, ideal for properties looking to showcase an authentic and sophisticated facade.

Why Lime Mortar?

All of our pointing options use lime-based mortar, which is breathable and flexible, allowing for natural movement in the brickwork without cracking. This helps preserve the facade’s durability, particularly for older properties, while maintaining a traditional appearance. Each pointing style is carefully applied to balance aesthetics with the specific needs of the property, ensuring a finish that is both beautiful and long-lasting.

Stone & Woodwork

Stonework Redecoration

Our stonework redecoration services are designed to restore the beauty and integrity of your property’s stone features. We offer two distinct options to meet different restoration needs, each carefully crafted to enhance appearance and provide lasting protection.

Suited for stonework that doesn’t require restoration but needs more detailed preparation, this service refines edges and smooths imperfections. Loose paint is removed, cracks are filled, and extra sanding is done for a sharper finish, with stabiliser applied as needed. The facade is then completed with three coats of Dulux Weathershield masonry paint for a more polished look.
